What a year!|Was für ein Jahr!

First things first: Merry Christmas to everyone!

It's been quite a year – yeah, this might sound a little weird as there's still another week to go, but I want to get this blog post done now as it's highly unlikely that I'll find the time next week. The most obvious new development (looking at things from the perspective of the webmaster of this page) is that I got my own homepage. Yay! It's been a project I wanted to start quite a while ago and I'm glad I eventually did in April. While I haven't really taken (I want to avoid the term “found”) the time to keep this blog as up to date as I wanted it to be, I hope it was still able to entertain you from time to time and give you some updates about what's happening in my life.

Speaking of which… back in April, when this whole thing went online, I was still employed by Upper Deck. After more than 4 years, this relationship came to an end in June and I had to look for a new job. It's been the first time I had to look for a job and I want to thank all the great people who helped me writing applications, making connections, etc. Without all your help, this would not only have been infinitely harder, I think I would have also been a lot less successful.

Eventually, I was hired by Station54, a Berlin based company doing Community Management; mainly for Electronic Arts. At first, this had been an amazing job, but it eventually came to a close at the end of October (I blogged about this: 4 Months with BattleForge). Well, I learned a lot regardless and my CV looked a little better as I could then claim I had been working as an Event Manager, Community Manager, Translator, Author, Customer Service Rep and some more stuff. Seems like life turned into a hunt for fancy job titles…

In the past 2 months, I was looking for a job again and I'm glad that I can now tell you that I've found an awesome new opportunity! Starting January the 4th, I'll be doing Online Marketing for smava. It's the market leader in a pretty new field; it allows you to get a credit financed by other people rather than by a bank (in case you're interested, you should check out the homepage: As this is quite new for me as well, the employment is only of limited duration. However, if I do good, I can turn this into something permanent, so wish me luck (any tips are welcome!). I have to say this is quite an amazing Christmas present.

Fortunately, life's not all about work. I'm more than happy that I spent the whole year with the same girl and I couldn't be asking for more. In case you weren't lucky enough to meet Wincy so far, stop by whenever you're in Berlin and I'll be glad to introduce her to you.

What else? Well, I not only kept up my work for the Card Master and the Kartefakt, I'm recently writing for an English magazine, the Yu-Gi-Oh! World, too! On top of that, I'm still writing weekly columns. While my Yu-Gi-Oh! column Unter den Hut geschaut ended (thanks to Upper Deck's loss of the Yu-Gi-Oh! licence), I started a new World of Warcraft TCG column on Suppe für den soul. I also stepped in for another author and continued the column for players new to the WoW TCG: Der Versammlungsstein. So even when I was without a “real” job, I was rather busy.

All in all, it has been quite a year. I'm glad I was able to make new friends, spend so much time with my existing friends, have a blast playing the WoW TCG and that things turned out the way they did. I'm more than certain that 2010 will be even more exciting!

I'll celebrate the turn of the years in Leipzig with my best friends and I hope you'll also have a blast partying into the new year!

Update on the Community Management page|Update der Community Management Seite

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like my homepage can keep up with the current speed of change that I'm facing in my life. Therefore, some of the sub-sites aren't up to date and contain outdated information. I just managed to update the community management page (deleted the BattleForge entry and updated the information for and, so let's call that a start. I'll soon update the Writing page as well as the rest of the homepage.

4 Months with BattleForge|4 Monate BattleForge

Time flies. Yeah, everyone knows that, but still we keep forgetting it. After I learned that my involvement with BattleForge is coming to a close, I looked back at the day when I got told that I'll be getting this chance and really had to wonder. It seemed like all the excitement had worn off rather fast, considering it's only been a few months.

What helped was taking a deeper look at the past months. I wouldn't have thought so at first, but we accomplished quite a few things in this seemingly short time. I was able to remove a few barriers between the development team and the player community, both sides were always on top of things and knew what the other was doing (at least if we were allowed to communicate that).

The moderator team has seen a few great people leave as well as some amazing new guys not just filling in for them, but rather turning the whole thing around. Never before has any community team been as much on top of things. This made my job as an Assistant Community Manager a million times easier, so thanks to Stromberry, Narkol, Aliyon, ghengismark and Adita! You have all done an amazing job and I'm glad you'll all keep it up and do your best to support this awesome community.

Speaking of which, I have seen a few communities in the last few years, but the BattleForge community has been special in quite a few regards. Sure, you have the “nerdrage” here and there where people complain for no obvious reason, but despite it's – relatively – small size, there has been a high number of individuals that showed a very strong dedication. Usually, you can find one dedicated fan among 1000 registered users; this ratio has been way better for BattleForge.

I'm especially glad that I was able to oversee the change of the community team and be responsible for coordinating these remarkable guys. I feel confident that my pick of the new Community Representative (Chris aka Silvanoshi) was a good one and by now, he should have proven to all BattleForge players that they couldn't have asked for a better “blue poster”. Coordinating the localization together with our Russian and French Community Reps has always been a task I enjoyed, thanks to the amount of work they were willing to invest. I would certainly not mind working with them again, the team has simply been amazing.

So yeah, that's pretty much it. Like I stated in my initial announcement when I first told all the readers of this blog what I will be doing in the future, I'm thankful for the chance I received. So yeah, if you're one of the BattleForge fans, a moderator, a member of the community team or just someone else who stumbled across this post because of BattleForge: I'm sure we'll meet again, so see you soon!

Phat update!|Dickes Update!

It was about time to update some of the work pages (as I didn't mention there although my current job is to take care of that site), so I finally did that today. I changed the title of the page about the websites I'm active on from “Websites” to “Community Management” as… well, that's what I'm doing there and I heard that's much better from a Search Engine's point of view (you might ask: Who the hell cares for a Search Engine's point of view?! – well, blame yourself as you're also most likely one of these guys who originally got aware of this site via Google!).

After providing this site with a do-over, I had to realize that the other work pages could need some updates, too. So well, I fixed them as well (some of the tags were really buggy and even though you won't see a change it will be less messy from… a Search Engine's point of view – OK, enough with the fucking Search Engines already!). On a related note: got banished from my favorite sites and took the spot.

I found 3 typos in my texts which could be considered a (sad) record, but I'm actually more shocked about the fact that no one ever made me aware of them. Dear readers, I'm a perfectionist and if I would have known that there are such silly mistakes on my web presence, I wouldn't sleep. So in case you find any more mistakes, just let me know. I'll be thankful, believe me!
