Summer vacation in Rimini
Posted by soulwarrior in Blog on 29 June 2011
In a way, summer vacation started today! If you’ve been reading some of my recent articles or been following up some of my posts on Facebook and the WoW TCG forums (like the forum of the Bootcamp L.E.), chances are you already know what I’m talking about: 3 of my friends (Christian, Ronny and Schmalle) and I will take a trip to Rimini together in a camper van! We’ll leave Leipzig tomorrow afternoon and be on the road for pretty much the rest of the day. We should arrive Rimini sometime Thursday afternoon after spending the night somewhere in Southern Bavaria in the camper van.
Why Rimini, you might ask? Well, turns out the European Continental Championship of the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game will take place the upcoming weekend there. Naturally, we’ll all try our luck in the main event and why not spend some more days there, enjoying the sun and company of good friends?! I’m rather excited and can’t wait for the tournament to begin! On the one hand, I’m a little afraid I might scrub out early again, but I’m hopeful that my preparation will suffice and help me to advance to day 2 with a comfortable record.
On Saturday, we’ll be drafting. I love drafting and tend to think of myself as a rather competitive limited player, however, I wasn’t doing that well in the drafts parts of past events (save the iPod draft side events – I can’t complain about my record there). Let’s just wait and see how it will turn out this time, in any case, I’m hopeful.
Being the crazy fools we are, we decided to provide you with a coverage of our trip (some might remember an epic trip to Budapest which was featured in similar fashion)! We’ll start with that as early as tomorrow, when a first opening blurp will go live on www.BootcampLE.de. Be sure to check it out and leave some comments!
What else is there to say? Well, my business is doing OK, now that most of the hassles with German bureaucracy have been taken care of. I’m still waiting for a final decision regarding health care, but I guess I’ll do fine as long as I don’t get sick. So keep your fingers crossed!
Fabian found a nice appartment in Berlin and might take it, so we should soon be able to work on some projects together and I expect business to take off then.
So yeah, all in all, I’m doing OK. Sometimes it’s hard to find the motivation to do some of the work as I’m constantly at home; I still haven’t found a great solution for that particular challenge. If you can come up with some good ideas, be sure to pass them on.
On the relationship front, I’m doing great. Wincy is simply amazing, it’s just she doesn’t like some particular traits of this country too much (well, we share that passion in a way), so she can be a little grumpy at times. I still consider leaving the country together with her, but I don’t want to do so just now. First, I want to see if my own business can turn into a success and bring in enough money to make a living. If that won’t work out, I guess it will finally be time to leave Germany for good.
In a nutshell: I’ve been able to leave some bullshit behind (German bureaucracy) and there are exciting times ahead. First a vacation in Italy, then a trip to Dortmund to catch up with some old friends and then a trip to Madrid for the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship Qualifier – European Championship. Who knows, maybe I’ll even start picking up a tan again with all that time in South European countries?! Let me know what you think and wish me well.
Warcraft-TCG.de is down
Posted by soulwarrior in News on 17 February 2011
I received a call this morning from my good friend Christian, asking me to access Warcraft-TCG.de. It turned out the site was down and the message shown instead of the familiar homepage read “domain for sale”. I don’t know exactly what happened, however, what I do know is we need a website for the German WoW TCG community. For the time being, I would suggest using the official WoW TCG forums (sub-forum for “Elwynn Forest”, the German speaking Realm).
My team, the Bootcamp L.E., is also missing its own dedicated forums. For the time being, we can make use of my forum, the PE Board, where I’ve set up a dedicated Bootcamp forum section. Further, we’ve decided that it would be best to set up a website for the Bootcamp. This way, we can make sure all members can communicate with each other – no matter if a third party site goes down or not. It will take us a little while to come up with something, but I should soon have more news for you.
Essen Toy Fair Spiel 2010
Posted by soulwarrior in News on 26 October 2010
The last 5 days, the Spiel in Essen was held – the largest gaming fair in the world (yes, that includes the GenCon). My good friend Christian asked me ages ago to not plan something for this very weekend, however, just 7 days prior to the faire, I was still not sure if I would or should go. In the end, I decided to make the trip (despite the train tickets being ridiculously expensive) to catch up with some of my friends, have some talks with Amigo, Cryptozoic, Konami and… well, play some card games.
My friends from Cryptozoic and Konami were caught up in meetings most of the time and there wasn’t too much to talk about with Amigo, so I checked out the rest of the faire after I played some cards (on Saturday, I went 2 – 1 in the draft besides playing a horrible deck and on Sunday, I won the tournament which in turn gut me an Archives Uncut Sheet). It was probably the first time I was able to check out the faire; in the past I always helped out at some booth and was pretty caught up. Anyway, I came across the booth of the great guys from Gary Games, who introduced their very own game to the visitors: Ascension.
My friend and former colleague (back in the Upper Deck days) Ryan O’Connor gave me a demo of the game and I had to say I liked it. I’m not a huge board game person, but Ascension is a little like a mix between a board and a trading card game. Some claim it’s just another Dominion clone”, but even though it’s also a “deckbuilding game” (a game in which you’re building and improving your deck while the game’s underway), there are some bigger differences between the two games (most notably: You never know what’s coming in Ascension while you can decide on a strategy for Dominion right at the beginning of the game – I guess that’s something intriguing to TCG players and that’s why I feel like Ascension is the better fit for me).
I was lucky enough to get to know some of the cool guys from Gary Games better, including the owner (and Magic Hall of Famer) Justin Gary. I learned that Ascension has picked up a lot of momentum in the US and they’re still in the process of getting it on track in Germany. Fortunately, I could be of help to the guys and make some introductions, so hopefully we’ll soon see it in game store shelves all over Germany. You really should give it a try or at least check out the website of the game: AscensionGame.com.
I also received a The Spoils demo. It seemed to be a good TCG, however, it seems to suffer from the same problem that already killed Vs. System: It’s simply too complex for mediocre players to master, so they’ll eventually get frustrated, getting beaten up by veteran players over and over again. It’s too early for me to give you a recommendation, but I guess I’ll keep you posted (don’t expect me to drop the WoW TCG for any other TCG, that’s not gonna happen).
The upcoming weekend, I’ll be in Leipzig for the 5 year celebration of the local Enchilada. On Friday evening, we’ll also be playing some other games and among them will be Ascension (and maybe also The Spoils). So expect some more information about the new games soon!
Let me know what you think about the Spiel and the games (in case you tried them already).
P.S.: Now, you can also find a review of Ascension in darkpact’s gaming Blog.
Selling Loots on eBay
Posted by soulwarrior in News on 17 October 2010
Rumor had it that eBay would charge no fees this very weekend. While that turned out to be wrong (as far as I’m concerned, I was still charged for every single auctions), I decided it would be best to finally get rid of all the stuff that I wanted to sell anyway. Among the items I’m selling are:
- Exclusive Yu-Gi-Oh! YCS Judge Playmat – Sun Dragon Inti and Moon Dragon Quilla
- Loot Blazing Hippogryph
- Loot Spectral Kitten
- Loot Ogre Disguise Trinket
The highlights are certainly the 2 Loot Ogre Disguise Trinkets; those are no longer available as the UD Points Store had been shut down after Upper Deck’s involvement with the WoW TCG ended. Those are certainly some of the last Ogre Disguise Trinkets that are still available, making them a real rarity!
If you’re interested in any of those items, be sure to let me know. There are plenty of ways to get in touch (commenting here, contacting me via Facebook or ICQ / Skype / etc.)!
The Darkmoon Faire Antwerp
Posted by soulwarrior in Coverages, News on 12 October 2010
If you’ve been following my blog the past weeks, you knew that the DMF Antwerp was held the past weekend. After all, I organized a trip to the event. Here are some bits about it:
Our drive couldn’t have gone much better. That is, considering that the holidays started on that very weekend for Nordrhein-Westfalen and there were some smaller traffic jams. And Antwerp being a pain in the ass for car drivers as it’s full of one way streets. If you’ve taken a wrong turn, you were often forced to drive around the whole block as there was just no other way and you had to follow one one way street after another until you finally got back to one of the few “bigger” streets. Anyway, the city was decent enough so we set foot in it on Friday evening and took a walk to the local game store… only to find out that everybody was leaving.
Well, that was almost that for Friday evening. I didn’t playtest a lot prior to the event and couldn’t come up with any fancy ideas, so I just stuck with the “best deck” that the Bootcamp playgroup came up with: Timmo Shadestep. The deck WAS good, however, I wasn’t. I made some misplays and started with a 0 – 2 record.
I was able to equal my score in the following 2 rounds, but already asked prior to the start of round 3 if I could help working on the coverage if I would drop out of the tournament. Carl Crook, the Organized Play and Sales and Marketing and everything Manager for Cryptozoic in Europe appreciated it, so I almost thought the tournament was over for me (as a player). After a mirror match I lost in round 5 (at least this time I made no misplays!), I dropped and set myself the goal of writing as many articles as the other writer Robbe. I love competition! Robbe was a nice guy, but had next to no experience, so I thought it could be possible to catch up despite him having had 5 more rounds to write articles.
At the end of the day, I was 2 articles short (9 compared to Robbe’s 11), but I think I still didn’t do too bad. You can check everything out right here: Live Coverage DMF Antwerp!
Fortunately, some members of the Bootcamp were a little better prepared than myself, so Ronny Schmertosch and Christian Kurze both stole a spot in the top 8, playing their respective versions of the Zaritha deck that Karl Rößler, another member of our team, has been playing and tweaking for quite a while now.
In the end, it was Christian who claimed the win for the team! He ended up with the better match-ups and took out each and every opponent this weekend without ever losing a single round, giving him a perfect 17 – 0 record in games (which translates to a 14 – 0 record in matches – the top 8 were all best of 3)! He’s rather new to the game, so for me this is a great example what an amazing community like the Bootcamp can do for an individual; you pick up the game A LOT faster and learn about some of the more advanced moves in no time! You end up with useful decklists that can help you earning a title like a DMF win!
Right after the event, we drove back to Berlin. This time without the traffic jams, so we were “only” on the road from 7 pm (Sunday) to 3 am (Monday). Thanks to some energy drinks, the whole trip went without any incidents! For me, it was a rewarding experience to do something for the German community by organizing a little trip to the event and also doing something for the community as a whole by working as a member of the staff.
Let me know what you think about the coverage and leave your 2 cents about the event! I’m looking forward to seeing some of the amazing guys again next year, either in Paris or in Cologne!
Trip to DMF Antwerp
Posted by soulwarrior in News on 14 September 2010
After a number of bad news for fans of the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, I decided it is about time to give you guys some stuff to look forward to again: I’m organizing a group trip from Berlin to the Darkmoon Faire Antwerp!
We would rent a car and pick all interested players up. Like I said, we’ll start in Berlin, but we’ll also pass Braunschweig, Hannover, Bielefeld and Dortmund. So this might also be a good chance for you if you’re living in one of those cities. More information can be found on Warcraft-TCG.de.
