The Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2011

Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2011The past weekend, I was busy doing coverage for the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2011. It was the second time I’ve been at Worlds (after I head judged the 2008 World Championship) and it has been a very rewarding experience again! (I’d also like to point out that both times I’ve been there, a Japanese player won – if that ain’t reason enough for the Konami headquarters to fly me in for all future World Championships, I don’t know what is!)

Given the special nature of the event, we couldn’t generate some of the most sought-after content (e.g. Feature Matches) – we didn’t want to put even more pressure on a player who was already fighting on the world’s highest stage by exposing all of his plays to a huge audience. This led to some negative feedback as expected, but I think that PJ and I were still able to provide you with a great live impression of what was going on on site, even with the restrictions in place.

I really had a blast in Amsterdam and am very happy to have been part of this special tournament! Granted, there were a few disappointments (lack of cocktail bars in Amsterdam), but all things considered, I wouldn’t have wanted to miss out on the event.

World Championship 2011 Playmat showing Utopia!Speaking of memorablia, I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the exclusive Utopia playmats that have been given out this weekend. It’s the exclusive Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2011 Playmat and it’s already changed hands on eBay for more than 400,- €. I considered keeping it, but I honestly can’t pass such an opportunity and put my playmat up for auction. Go check it out and send me a price suggestion, here’s the link one more time: Worlds Playmat.

If you’ve been to Amsterdam and / or enjoyed following up on the coverage, leave a comment below and let me know what you thought about the event / the coverage!

Off to Madrid!

Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship Qualifier: European ChampionshipAlright folks, I’m off to Madrid. Gotta catch a plane to arrive at the hotel in time for some pre event briefing and other preparation stuff.

You can check out the live coverage of the World Championship Qualifier: European Championship on the official Konami website. Additionally, there’s a chance I can keep you posted on Twitter, but don’t count on it!

For feedback regarding the coverage, you can reach me via ICQ (#44734926), the aforementioned Twitter, maybe Facebook (guess I won’t have the time to be active there), even less likely Google+, but most certainly on eTCG.de (although I might not reply immediately, I WILL read your feedback there)! See you in Madrid!

soulwarrior on Google+

Google+Google learned from their past mistakes with Google Wave and Google Buzz – both products that never took off as people were simply not able to use some of the cool features of those products – and launched a new product that seems to be destined to take the social world in a storm: Google+.

Not surprisingly, I wanted to be one of the early adopters, so I joined the network. After all, I’m rather active on the various social media sites floating around the web. If you’re interested in my first few thoughts about Google+, check out the blog post on nexTab.de. If you simply want to add me to your circles, head over to gplus.to/soulwarrior.

Online Petition for the Nationals Coverage

Yesterday, I had been asked for (what felt like) the 354th time, if I would be present at this year’s German Nationals. I declined and explained that I did receive an invite by Amigo, however, we couldn’t come to an agreement regarding the compensation for the event.

Unlike so many before him, Giocci didn’t just say “Hm, that sucks” and leave it at that; he decided to take action. He started an Online Petition with the goal of collecting 5.000 votes to convince Amigo to have me there.

I find it amusing on the one hand, but feel honored at the same time. Collecting 5.000 votes is certainly no easy task (some of my older fans might still remember how hard it was to collect 1.000 votes to see Matthias in the Hot Sauce Field Trial), but feel free to throw in your vote if you want to see me at this year’s German Nationals.

Happy Birthday!

Today is my website’s birthday. It’s the 2 year celebration. Quite shocking if you ask me, as to me it feels like I’ve been posting here for ages already. “Ages” as in 4 years or even more.

Some parts could be updated, however, I’m rather busy these days with my new business venture and haven’t really found the time to do so. I promise to finish updating some sections before it’s time for the 3 year celebration!

One of my upcoming projects will be a new website, talking a little about books. Therefore, the Books section should also see an update soon. Stay tuned!

P.S.: Ich kämpfe derzeit mit chronischen Kopfschmerzen. Sollte jemand ein Mittel dagegen kennen, so freue ich mich über einen entsprechenden Tipp!

Providing Content for Trading-Cards.eu

I’m happy to announce that from now on, I’ll also provide content for the website Trading-Cards.eu. The website is a rather unique and cool project in my personal opinion. The online TCG store Gwindi is running it as a special service for their great customers – customer-connectivity at its best!

I’m looking forward to your feedback to some of the articles I’ll publish there. Additionally, you’ll also see me from time to time on Gwindi’s YouTube Channel, so be sure to check that out, too!

200!

I think the last time an anniversary for this website came round, I simply missed it. Only more reason to make up for it this time and announce the 201st post in a big way! That’s right, 201st, as the sad story about Warcraft-TCG.de’s downtime marked the 200th post. Anyway, this website is live since April 2009 and that means I managed to write more than 100 posts per year, which doesn’t sound too bad.

Let’s reminisce a bit; if you take a closer look at the archive of April ’09, you’ll see some similarities between my situation back then and what’s happening with my life just now. April ’09 marked a big change for me as I left Upper Deck, my first real employer (as a result, my weekly column Unter den Hut geschaut took a pretty long break and I’m glad it’s back). Now, I’m still in the process of setting up my own business which is a little like looking for jobs (as you’re constantly looking for clients).

In the past (almost) 2 years, I went through 2 different jobs and learned quite a lot (not only work-wise, but also about myself and life in general). My website was supposed to be taken down at some point last year, but I made sure it survived. It’s one of the many channels I like to use to express myself and became very dear to me. I’m sorry for having neglected it a little – some sections could certainly need a make-over.

At the moment, I’m still fighting the good fight with state agencies that seem to be reluctant when it comes to supporting my business. I’m trying to be patient, waiting for a friend to join my business and take over acquisition of new possible clients, something I don’t quite excel in. Word of mouth has less of an effect compared to what I hoped for, so I’ll need to get familiar with more techniques to acquire new possible customers. Something that annoys me to no end as I “just want to work”.

Don’t get me wrong, there are also a number of upsides to this whole thing. I found the time to go on an amazing weekend trip the past Friday to Sunday and I’ll head off to Leipzig the upcoming Friday to prepare for the World of Warcraft TCG World Cup (a team event). I’m happy that I won’t have to ask for days off and can just “go for it” when I feel like it. Then again, I’ll need to make a living somehow and my 1337 WoW TCG skills don’t really pay for the bills. If you have some fancy ideas that seem right for me and maybe know a few magazines or websites that could need a crazy writer, by all means please let me know.

Words of encouragement sent my way are also appreciated and while you’re at it, you could also send some more customers my way. Sometimes it’s hard to not forget that this is the path I have chosen and that there are a number of worse situations one could imagine. After all, I do make a living with a lot of things I love. It’s just that I feel I’ve got infinite potential and at the moment, I’m accessing a mere 50% of it (at best). I still need to finish writing a novel (something else I started in 2009, but haven’t had the time to continue lately – “lately” as in “the past 10 months”), a stand up comedy and a rap song. I guess these are some good goals to set for myself before I’ll publish a “300!” post (it will most likely come with some sort of “Sparta” reference).

Until then, I hope you’ll all continue to follow my website, provide me with some feedback (by the way, this website counts 199 comments at this very moment, so you can be the 200th to comment!) or stay in touch via Facebook / Twitter and on the various message boards I’m active on.

P.S.: Speaking of other sites I’m active on, go check out the BootcampLE.de website that I’ve set up the past few days and let me know what you think!
