No lifer? Not necessarily!

Today, I stumbled across a great article written by Clay Shirky. Or, to be more precise, a great transcript of a speech he gave at a Web 2.0 conference. In case you took a little deeper look at my homepage, you already know that I’m quickly drawn into books that teach us new ways of looking at society or explain why people behave the way they do. Clay takes a look at the way how we’re spending our freetime and he’s explaining why someone who is playing World of Warcraft for 3 hours a day is not actually a no lifer, but rather doing something at least partially useful – especially compared to watching TV.

I have to admit I haven’t been the biggest supporter of people “wasting” lots of time in the World of Warcraft (then again, who am I to judge these guys – after all, I’m into playing cards and in the eyes of some people, this must look just as weird…), but I changed my thinking a little after reading over this article.

Further, thanks to my good friend Matthias, I have been introduced to the remarkable novel “The Diamond Age” by Neal Stephenson. This is easily one of the 5 most entertaining novels I’ve ever read. The novel tells the story of Nell, a little girl who got in touch with an interactive book (the “Primer”) and shows how she grows up in a world that is ever changing and always presenting itself with new challenges for her which she solves thanks to the help of her Primer. Clay pretty much shows that the idea that has been spelled out in the novel (interactive learning is the future) has almost become reality.

For me, that already makes two good reasons to order Clay’s book. Maybe you want to do the same after reading his article which can be found here.

Suppe für den soul – Let’s build a community

In one of my first columns, I addressed the important topic of nurturing communities. I said only if a community sticks together, there’s room for growth and success. Some could claim I’m more a preacher than a doer, so I felt like doing something about it.

As you might know, I started to advertise the Battlegrounds in Berlin and started to draw in more players. We’ve been constantly 8 players on the last few weeks and there’s still more to come. If you’re also interested in how to build a community, read this week’s Suppe für den soul – Let’s build a community.

Der Versammlungsstein – resource advantage

A while ago, we had a regular column on Warcraft-TCG.de that targeted players completely new to the game. Unfortunately, the column couldn’t be continued by its original author 8DUKE8.

Good news: I now decided to step in and take over! So you’ll be able to get 2 articles written by me every week from now on. In my first attempt to guide new players, I wanted to explain resource advantage. You may find the article here: Der Versammlungsstein – resource advantage!

Suppe für den soul – Banned List

Time and time again, the topic of a banned list for the WoW TCG came up in the forums. I felt it was time to address this topic and provide you with my own thoughts regarding the matter.

Head on to my weekly column: Suppe für den soul – Banned List!

Goodbye eTCG.de

All good things must come to an end – this is pretty much the way I feel about my involvement with eTCG.de. I really enjoyed my time there and it has been an amazing time, however, I feel it’s time to move on.

In a nutshell: I don’t think I can give enough to this community to fill out the role as administrator anymore. The whole Yu-Gi-Oh! community is going through a difficult time of change and it will need some new blood to lead the way. You may read some more of my thoughts in the forum announcement.

Suppe für den soul – DMF Amsterdam

Last weekend, the Darkmoon Faire Amsterdam took place. It was only the second bigger event I was able to attend, but it was my format – Sealed. I always claimed I’m not too bad and I was finally put up to the test. I got rather lucky with my pool and reached the top 8. One good draft later, I was able to advance to the finals with a pretty good deck. Unfortunately, Anssi Alkio beat me there, but still coming in second is more than I could have asked for.

Read everything about the great event in my weekly column: Suppe für den soul – DMF Amsterdam!

Tommi followed up my tournament report with his own that got published yesterday. Today, I’m not only describing the rest of the tournament, I’m also showing you guys how to properly build a deck (as the auction for the n00bs showed us that this might not be that easy after all).

So come on, check out my new article: Suppe für den soul – Invitational Part 3 and start to regret that you weren’t there!
